Theme:Transgressing Oppressive Contexts through Bilingual Education: Navigating Threats to Multilingualism
The NABE 2026 Research Institute, sponsored by the Research & Evaluation Special Interest Group is accepting proposals for short papers to be presented at the 55th Annual NABE Conference in Chicago, IL. At this precarious moment, it is more important than ever to support bilingual education and multilingual learners through the power of research and its connection to teaching and learning. We endorse bilingualism as a right and a resource. We are committed to the value of a multilingual multicultural society including English as a language of wider communication within and beyond our borders in addition to the many treasures represented by the rich tapestry of languages and cultures that make up our diverse society. We are steadfast in our support of all multilingual communities and stakeholders and recognize the many benefits of bilingualism and bidialectalism to individuals and to our society. We encourage research-oriented paper submissions that reflect our theme and welcome ALL research paradigms: experimental; quasi-experimental; descriptive; qualitative, including phenomenology, (constructivist) grounded theory, narratives, (auto) ethnographies, testimonios; mixed designs and more. We affirm that each approach provides a useful lens to enhance our understanding.
We also encourage submissions that focus on: • data-based, theoretical, and/or pedagogical practices on bilingualism, second/foreign/world language acquisition, intercultural communication, language and technology integration and/ or language assessment. • community-centered initiatives for greater linguistic and cultural inclusion. • research on a range of languages and varieties, especially those that are currently under-represented in bilingual education and/or are associated with marginalized populations. Your abstract should be between 150-250 words. Please include a proposal title, author(s) and affiliation, and a short summary of 50 words. Be sure to mention the language(s) involved in your study or discussion. Also include your preferred email and mobile number.
The deadline for submission to the Research and Evaluation SIG is June 30th, 2025. A notice of acceptance status will be sent by Aug 15, 2025.
